Homestay Hoang Tuan still preserves Tay's cultural identity
In Thuong Lam, traditional brocade weaving is now playing an essential role in promoting tourism. The homestay model, particularly popular in villages such as Ban Cho and Na Tong, has drawn a growing number of visitors from all walks of life. What sets these homestays apart is not only their distinctive stilt-house architecture but also the presence of brocade looms in nearly every home. Guests are invited to observe, and even participate in, the creation of intricate handwoven textiles, offering them a deeper insight into the daily lives and traditions of the Tay people.
These homestays also showcase and sell a wide variety of brocade products: Traditional garments, blankets, pillows, tossballs, and vibrant handmade souvenirs. Each item is crafted with meticulous care, featuring motifs inspired by local nature and folklore - flowers from forest trees like Duabanga grandiflora and White cedar, or symbols such as dogs and moons - expressing the identity and imagination of the mountain communities.
Memebers of Thuong Lam Brocade Weaving Cooperative discuss needlework experience
To ensure the continuity and growth of this traditional craft, local residents have established the Thuong Lam Brocade Weaving Cooperative Group, which now boasts 19 members. Mr. Ma Cong Kham, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thuong Lam commune, told us that the local government has supported these efforts by encouraging the expansion of the cooperative model and providing assistance with weaving equipment, skills training, and market access. Under Resolution 03 of the Provincial People’s Council, the commune is also moving toward the formation of a brocade weaving cooperative, aiming to attract investment and build a sustainable production-tourism linkage.
Beyond its cultural significance, brocade weaving is contributing to the economic development of the community. Coupled with the commune’s stunning natural beauty - rivers, mountains, ancient forests, and expansive rice fields - Thuong Lam holds great potential for eco-tourism and cultural tourism in the years ahead.
The revival of brocade weaving in Thuong Lam exemplifies how tradition can be transformed into opportunity, enriching the cultural experience for visitors while enhancing livelihoods and preserving heritage for future generations.
